Club History

Genetics and Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing and most exciting areas of science and technology. Advancements in computer science joined hands with biologists and developed the field of bioinformatics to handle the massive amount data created by gene and protein sequencing. The genome of several species has been sequenced and scientists the world over are scrambling to interpret the puzzling code. Their results are bound to impact our lives by affecting food production, medicines, environmental conservation, forensic science, and more. The purpose of the BYU Genetics and Biotech Club is to help students to stay on top of recent developments in genetics and biotechnology and to prepare them to be academically and professionally successful.

In October 2005 Michael Hallstrom and Sam Felin, both Biotech Business majors, saw the need for a resource where students interested in Biotechnology and Genetics could share their ideas and find out more about the latest discoveries in biology. They approached Dr. Jeff Maughan with the plans for the club and asked him to be the club's first faculty advisor. He gave them his enthusiastic support, and the BYU Genetics and Biotech Club was born.

The Club is through the BYU College of Biology and Agriculture and is meant for any BYU students interested in Genetics and Biotechnology. Club members come from a variety of majors including: Genetics, Biotech Business, Bioinformatics, and Plant Biology. Our diversity of interests include medicine, agriculture, law, teaching, research, industry, pharmaceuticals, animal biotechnology, plant science, international development, and more. Our basic focus as a club concerns news and information, academics, employment, and making friends. We generally have two meetings a month with student, faculty, or professional speakers who discuss topics relating to our club. We strive to help students to discover internship and employment opportunities through emails and postings on our club website. We also have field trips once a semester and fun activities. Visitors are welcome and we are always accepting new members. Come and check it out!
