Opportunity in Japan
Hello All! I recently received an email about an internship opportunity for various majors, including Life Science, at a top rated bank in Japan. They want people who are fluent in Japanese. It doesn't say a lot about the opportunity, but it looks like something that would be right up the BioTech alley. I don't think that I can attach the word document about it here, so I will email it to one or two of your club leaders, or you can email me at interns_mmbio@byu.edu and I will forward the email to you. Please be aware that in order to get this internship you will need to complete an interview September 19th, which is coming up. Interviews need to be scheduled ahead of time, so get the information from me or someone else, FAST. If you're worried about a scholarship or credits or anything like that, then feel free to talk to me and I can try and help you work things out, thanks!

Resume Samples
Hi All, My name is Michael and I know that you guys are looking for internship information. I found a book at Barnes & Noble called "Internships" by Peterson's and another one from Vault. They both look pretty good. Also, you may want to view some of the Sample Resumes on ResumeEdge.com. They were pretty helpful.

Just wanted to add that if you go to the Home -> Archives page, there are some internship files linked to our 18 Oct 2006 meeting. Lauren put them together and they provide very useful advice to getting internships in biotechnology, genetics, etc.

Internships in China
Anyone interested in interning at the Beijing Institute of Genomics, feel free to contact me. I worked there over last summer and had a great time. I can give you additional information and get you in touch with one of the project leaders.
Speaking Mandarin is not necessary in the lab, and the Institute works on a variety of projects. They have teams in proteomics, bioinformatics, genetics, virology, etc. The Institute also has labs in Hangzhou.

Business Biotech Research
I will be going to Argentina to present a paper in Biotechnology Business in Bioagriculture and Biofoods. I am currently researching Finnish and American companies and will start writing my paper during spring. I am working closely with Dr. Hansen to get published in a scientific journal. If you have any questions of getting involved with business research I have some pointers to give you (i.e. professors who would possibly like to work with you). Just email me at afelin@gmail.com

Academic Internships
Hey everyone. This summer I will be going to the Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, MO to work as a technician in a molecular plant pathology lab. I interned there two summers ago and had a wonderful experience. The members of my lab asked if I knew any really great students interested in interning there this summer, so if you are or want more information, email me pitt.lauren@gmail.com.

China internship
I guess we either need to ax these message boards or start using them. So I'll write the first post here.
This summer I'll be doing an internship in China with a genomics research institute. Here's how I found it.
I'm studying bioinformatics and on the side learning Chinese, so I really wanted to find an internship that would meld the two interests (since that's the career I'm sort of envisioning right now). So I started searching...and thankfully, searching early, since with an idea like this, you pretty much have to create the opportunity yourself, and it takes time and work.
The Kennedy Center wasn't helpful at all - all they did was refer me over and over to their website, or to a list of unhelpful websites. The Biology Internship office was nice and tried to be helpful, but they didn't have any leads, just ideas.
So I started networking with professors. This was a great experience for many reasons, one being the fact that it got me talking to professors that I never had a good enough excuse to bother. I was surprised some of the connections they had.
In the meantime, I hit up online directories of biotech companies and started compiling a list of phone numbers and websites. It was a little tricky, since many sites were in Chinese, but some looked promising.
I had previously emailed a professor who was away on a sabbatical, and he wrote back suggesting that I check out one particular research institute. This is where I got amazingly lucky. I found the out-dated English version of their website, stumbled upon a faculty CV with an email address. I wrote a descriptive email outlining my goals, grades, lab experience, and personality. It was a shot in the dark, but I got a response almost immediately! One lab director, who had studied in the US, was coincidentally on her way to SLC for the American Human Genetics conference, we ended up having a great conversation together over the phone. The rest is history.
The great thing is that I had other leads that may have also proven fruitful. It was a great experience in networking, and seriously, anyone looking for internships abroad need not be afraid to try. I hope this is helpful; I'll post again after the summer to say how it went!
